Community Service (Janeen Carson/Mark Haberman):

Thanks to the hard work and generosity of members and friends of the Central Ohio IFMA Chapter throughout the year, six Columbus families enjoyed a Thanksgiving dinner of turkey and all the traditional trimmings.

The number of families assisted by the chapter this year jumped from an anticipated four to six because of the success of the chapter's Adopt-a-Family fundraising program and because the families assisted this year were smaller in number than in the past.

Mark Haberman, Community Service Committee co-chair, said the largest family this year consisted of parents and three children while two families were composed of a single parent and one or two children.

Nevertheless, each enjoyed a dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and gravy, dinner rolls, cranberry relish, and pie. The dinners --enough food for eight to 10 people-- were prepared by Big Bear and delivered on Wednesday afternoon before Thanksgiving by Haberman and committee members Dorothy Leachman and Steve Holcomb.

Haberman said committee members were able to visit with the families and to get a "wish list" from each for their return visits December 20 for Christmas. While the lists ranged from the customary toys for the children and household items for the parents, committee members learned that several families were in dire need of washers and dryers.

"One mother said she had spent so much time and so many quarters at a Laundromat doing the family wash. We have been able to find a washer and dryer at a good price and will have them delivered to her," he said.

Haberman also related that Commercial Movers, Inc., is donating a washer-dryer set and that the committee at its last meeting decided to purchase two additional sets.

All families assisted are recommended through the St. John Center, 640 S. Ohio Ave., where the chapter has been active in this and other projects for some time.

Several chapter members have "signed up" to assist with the Christmas shopping on December 12 and 13 and the wrapping of the gifts for delivery on December 20. In addition to the three who delivered the Thanksgiving dinners, they include:

Janeen Carson, Community Services co-chair; Sally Gardner; Stephanie Segall; Joyce Cavin; Vicki Simons; Angie Castner; Laurie Mulligan; and Lin- Frazer-Smirniotopoulos.

All gifts are to be delivered to Chemical Abstracts Service, 2540 Olentangy River Road, by 1 p.m. December 20 for distribution to the families.

Membership (Daphne Swayze/Eileen Smith):

Ten persons became new professional members of the Central Ohio IFMA Chapter during the year 2000 Membership Drive just concluded, according to Membership Committee Co-Chair Daphne Swayze.

This brings chapter membership to 176, Swayze reported.

She announced Tom Robbins of Columbus State University as the winner in the drive to add the most members to the chapter. For his efforts, Robbins received $100 in cash and two tickets to a Columbus Blue Jackets' game.

Second place honors and $100 in cash went to Mike Milenovic of DFS, Inc., and Norma Brownfield of The Longaberger Company placed third and received $50 in cash.

Swayze said, "I want to congratulate the winners and to thank all our members for making this year's drive such a success."

Swayze also reported the committee is seeking to fill student membership openings and asks if members know of any full-time students in a facility management, planning, or architecture curriculum to contact her, Co-Chair Eileen Smith, or committee member J.D. Flaherty III.

There are currently two full-time student members and openings for eight more. Benefits to student members include networking for potential employment and educational programs; IFMS Members benefit by having an employment pool available.
