If you want to talk enthusiastically about successful events, you can’t beat the 16th Annual IFMA Golf Outing held June 24 at the Shamrock Golf Course as a conversation piece.

Once again the weather was nearly perfect even though the temperature did reach into the low 80s before most of the 94 participants left the course in late afternoon.

The catered buffet was first-rate—hamburgers and “fixins,” barbecued chicken breasts, baked beans, potato salad, and fudge brownies.

The cash prizes for “outstanding performances on the course” were excellent and well distributed among the players although Bryan Bigelow, who admitted playing to a five handicap, probably pocketed the most.  The par five, 525 yard 15th hole was especially kind to Bigelow where he collected $150 for the longest drive, conservatively estimated at 335 yards, another $33.25 as his share of $133 for a team (Anne Harrod, Bob Scavina, and Kate Plappert) skin with an eagle, and $80 for being closest to the pin.

The raffle, as usual, was extraordinary with a large number of golf balls, shirts, sweaters, hats, towels, $25 gift certificates, club covers, cooler, $100 carpet cleaning certificate, folding sports chairs, two office chairs, and a $100 putter and $170 golf bag purchased by IFMA.  Raffle tickets went fast, and proceeds will be used to help support the chapter’s community service program of providing Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and gifts for needy families in the Columbus area.

The four-person scramble from a shotgun start was won with a 15 under par 57 by a team headed by tournament chairman Jim Yankle and composed of Sandy Stayrook, Craig Thomas, and Dave Connelly.  The four, who were two strokes under last year’s winning team, received IFMA 2004 First-Place Hats, towels, and bragging rights until the tournament next year.

Yankle’s group also won a skin ($133) with an eagle on the 9th hole.  A team headed by Barry Longhino (Fred Bruce, Molly Ranz, and Dorothy Leachman) won the third skin with an eagle on number 14.  Other closest-to-the pin winners were Alex Abahazie on the 5th hole, Sandy Stayrook on the 7th, and Rick Bryant on the 13th.

And once again Yankle thanked the many sponsors of the tournament whose support helped cover the costs of the buffet and some of the raffled prizes.  He also expressed his and the chapter’s gratitude to those who “slipped in” with additional gifts for the raffle, and to those of the golf committee, which included Beth Cooper, Sandy Stayrook, Jack Supinger, and IFMA chapter administrator Debby McCreary.
