Questions!

These are some of the questions—answers are below—environmental experts with Cincinnati based Hixon left with members of the Central Ohio IFMA Chapter September 14 following a discussion on the Practical Applications of Sustainable Design--Based on the Principles of LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design.)

Sustainable design and construction is the opportunity to use resources more proficiently, while creating healthier environments and more energy-efficient offices and homes.

Participants in the program at the Fawcett Center were Hixson associates Thomas J. Hellerman, vice president and director of architecture and interior design; Colleen McCafferty, workplace design specialist and corporate interior team leader; and Linda M. Conour, client development manager with the architectural, engineering, and interior firm.  McCafferty also is a past president of IFMA Corporate Headquarters Council.

Hellerman said, “The LEED program was developed eight to nine years ago as an organizational tool to get everyone on the same playing field (environmentally) and to go from there.”

He said there are now more than 2,100 registered LEED projects in the U.S.—58 in Ohio, 15 in Indiana, and five in Kentucky.  Of this number, 294 have been certified or awarded silver, gold, platinum status based on the number of points the projects acquire by innovation and design, improving water efficiency, changing and/or improving energy usage and the atmosphere, using environmentally friendly materials and resources in construction or renovation, and improving indoor environment quality.

Hellerman said the program is designed to:

Hellerman said a number of Hixon’s clients are not going for LEED certification but still want to improve their environments through the use of environmentally-friendly products now available in lighting, carpet, paints and coatings, adhesives and sealants, and furniture and furnishings.

He urged IFMA members to help determine the impact sustainable design can have on their companies, whether the LEED certification program is right for their companies, what elements of sustainable design fit their companies’ culture, and the impact sustainable design might have on facilities and real estate.

Hellerman said a rule of thumb for a LEED project is about 10 percent of the cost, and could be even higher depending on the level the company or organization is trying to achieve.

Prior to the forum, Sandy Stayrook, co-chair of the Programs and Education Committee, reported next month’s program will be at 7:30 a.m. October 12 at the Fawcett Center and will involve a panel discussion on the projected growth and development in central Ohio in the next 25 years.  This will be the first in a series of programs that will extend into 2006.

A New Member Breakfast will be held at 7:30 a.m. October 19 at Panera Bread in the Olentangy Plaza, and a FMs First Roundtable will be offered at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Grandview Café.

Howard Miller desk clocks were won by Michael J. Cornett and David Goldberg whose names were drawn from a fishbowl containing business cards of those attending the event.
