Golf Outing

The rain gods toyed with the 18th Annual IFMA Golf Outing July 13 before relenting and showering the 96 golfers at Riviera Golf Club with sunshine, warmth, and high humidity—the three ingredients that make for a “perfect day on the course.”

In doing so, golf director Jim Yankle’s prediction that “It never rains when Central Ohio IFMA Chapter members and guests gather to play golf.” held true for another year.

As the 96 trudged from the course in search of food and drink, it was Dave Walton’s foursome—Karl Nijak, Tom Pauling, and Jason Taggart—that walked off as winners of the 18-hole scramble with a nine under 63.

Actually, for the second consecutive year a “playoff of sorts” was necessary as Walton’s team tied for low with Yankle’s team of Craig Thomas, Vicki Simons, and Jeff Parlet.

This was the first year for the outing at Riviera, which was obtained through chapter member and sponsor Bill Weiss, who holds membership there.  Weiss, Yankle, and Sandy Stayrook, co-chair of the Programs Committee, received a rousing round of applause for their efforts in organizing the outing that was coupled with the chapter’s annual Chapter Night and installation of officers.

Yankle said, “The event was one of our finest.  We had a great turnout, an outstanding course for golf, a tremendous facility for our dinner, and an unbelievable number of great gifts for the raffle that raised $1,000 for the chapter’s Adopt-a-Family fund and other community programs.   We certainly hope to play at Riviera again next year.”

While Walton’s team was capturing IFMA golf hats, bragging rights as outing winners for a year, a $50 skin, and an assortment of individual prizes won in the raffle sponsored by the chapter’s Community Service Committee, it was Dave Bongivengo who seemed to have his hand in the cookie jar.

Bongivengo won six gift certificates totaling $275, and a “San Diego shirt” and sleeve of golf balls, but being the nice guy he is, kept only a $75 gift certificate to the Riviera pro shop and a $25 certificate to Trader Joe’s.

He turned back a $50 IFMA gift certificate to Riviera for redrawing, and passed along a $50 certificate to Chipotle to Oren Snell, a $50 certificate to Riviera to Steve Sol, a $25 certificate to Target to Parlet, and the shirt and balls to Dan Oyer.

It looked as if Steve Niswonger might give Bongivengo a run for his money as he won $50 and $35 gift certificates to Riviera and a $25 BP gift card.  However, he explained later the $35 and $25 gifts were actually won on tickets purchased by John Kunz, who was unable to stay for the buffet dinner.

It seems an insect flew into Kunz’s ear with about four holes to go, causing him extreme discomfort.  Nevertheless, Kunz, as any devoted golfer would, finished the round and called his family doctor for relief.  On his way to the doctor’s office, he stopped at the Whitehall Fire Department for some emergency assistance, but firemen were unable to see or remove the insect.

Moments after arriving at the doctor’s office, a nurse inserted a light tube into Kunz’s ear, “and the bug crawled right into the tube,” he said.  Kunz, facilities manager for Motorists Mutual Insurance Co. took his “trophy” to work the next day so co-workers could view the bug and believe his harrowing tale.

Now, back to golf:

The golfers and several non-golfing chapter members who came for Chapter Night activities worked their way through a buffet of burgers, brats, chicken breasts, baked beans, cole slaw, fruit, and cookies before the drawings for prizes began.

Prizes ranged from office chairs donated by King Business Interiors and Dupler Office/AllSteel, to a $100 certificate for carpet/upholstery cleaning from Fiberseal of Central Ohio, and a four-foot by eight-foot nylon rug by Rebecca McNemar of Ultron to dinner for four at Martini Italian Bistro, and included numerous boxes and sleeves of golf balls, numerous gift certificates, golf towels, gasoline gift cards, golf shirts, golf umbrellas, barbeque grill and tool set.

The chapter provided 10 $50 gift certificates to Riviera, four thermal bags and $25 gift certificates to Trader Joe’s, and 12 (four each) $25 gift certificates to Panera Bread, Target, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

The chapter was also assisted greatly in gifts and hole sponsorships by the following:
