It was a “wild and crazy” bunch that invaded Columbus’ near west side July 17 for the annual Chapter Night festivities for members and guests of the Central Ohio IFMA Chapter.
Now, before anyone gets the wrong idea, it wasn’t the 40 or so IFMA members and guests clustered inside Margarita Mama’s, 391 Neil Ave. that made up the “wild and crazy” bunch.
This was composed of several thousand teenyboppers--and those who still thought they were--lined up for a concert by rapper Ja Rule at PromoWest Pavilion, the new Nationwide venue next door to the Mexican-flavored water hole.
Inside Margarita Mama’s, the somewhat more sedate group tossed back their favorite drinks, indulged in tortilla chips and salsa, carried on with chapter business and activities befitting a professional organization as best they could, and dreamt of days gone by.

The noise from inside and out brought an abrupt end to chapter announcements and committee reports and almost forced cancellation of the installation of officers. However, Gary Nuss, a former chapter president, prevailed and successfully installed the new officers for 2002-2003. They are:
Fred Timm of Fred Timm Management, president; Stephanie Patton, NBBJ facilities planner, vice president; Stephanie Segall, regional sales manager for Singer Wallcoverings, secretary; and Dorothy Leachman, president of Designed Moves, Inc., treasurer.
Timm later related that the officers and committee chairs are working on several projects, including developing a monthly calendar matrix “so we are able to list all of our activities, everything the chapter is doing,” updating of the chapter’s bylaws, updating the Web site, implementing some of the recommendations from the chapter’s recent planning conference, and seeking members to participate on the committees.
Despite the noise and culture clashing, the chapter event provided another great opportunity for camaraderie, networking, and for getting old, new, and prospective members talking about the many benefits of IFMA membership and association.
In August, IFMA members and guest will be looking down as they learn “What’s Up Underfoot? How to Keep Your Floors Looking Great.” This will be a workshop presented by DuPont Flooring Systems and the Hamilton Parker Co., specialists in brick and ceramic tile flooring.
The program will be at 7:30 a.m. August 14 at Hamilton Parker, 1865 Leonard Ave. Program Committee co-chairs Brittany Hauptman and Mike Milenovic said those attending will be divided into two groups with each receiving presentations on maintenance of ceramic tile and on care of carpet and resilient floors. The dual presentations will make it easier for those attending to see the various flooring demonstrations, she said.
Also, the Program Committee has scheduled a planning meeting for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. August 1 to help make 2003 monthly programs and events “fun, interesting, and relevant to careers.” The brainstorming session will be at NBBJ offices, 1555 Lake Shore Drive, just off of Riverside Drive in the Grandview Area.
Members are asked to bring their ideas for program topics, tours, and suggestions for speakers and facilitators, and to contact Hauptman or Milenovic by July 29 if planning to attend. If you have ideas for next year and are unable to attend the meeting, you may e-mail or telephone them to Hauptman at bhauptman@fhal.com, or 614-764-4661, or to Milenovic at 614-497-8200, Ext. 837.
